SECUNDERABAD: Close on the heels of the Nizam College protest for hostel facilities, the students of University Postgraduate College in Secunderabad (popularly known as Secunderabad PG College) took to the streets on Wednesday with a similar demand. They squatted at the Paradise intersection demanding hostel accommodation besides basic infrastructure for the degree students.

The students of the college, affiliated to the Osmania University, demanded that the State Government immediately provide hostel accommodation to the poor students coming from different parts of Telangana as they were facing difficulties with regard to their stay in the city.

The students came out of their college in a procession and staged a dharna at the adjacent Paradise intersection. They claimed that the college had no proper classrooms and CCTV cameras. The students demanded hostel accommodation for degree students on par with the PG students. They threatened to intensify the protest if their demands were not met.

Meanwhile, the police, who maintained maximum restraint, made repeated efforts to dissuade the students from carrying on with their protest. A police officer was seen in a video admonishing the students for going to the extent of blocking ambulances during their protest. Asking the students to be more responsible, the police officer was seen warning them against escalating the matter lest they should attract police cases.

The protest assumes significance in the wake of a prolonged agitation carried out by Nizam College students recently to press for hostel accommodation privilege to undergraduate girl students on par with postgraduate students. The Telangana Higher Education Commissioner has subsequently ordered a 50 percent allocation of hostel accommodation to undergraduate girl students, in an effort to end the stir. Later, the college authorities have also notified the undergraduate students to apply for accommodation in the newly constructed hostel block
