Water crisis in Hyderabad: Tankers replenish water supplies in KCR’s Nandinagar residence

HYDERABAD: Fast-receding levels of drinking reservoirs and depleting groundwater levels hurt the citizens of Hyderabad early this summer. The shortage of water was such that even the former Chief Minister’s residence had to depend on water tankers for regular household usage.

Underlining the gravity of the situation a video went viral that showed a tanker filling up the sump at KCR’s Nandinagar residence, courtesy of local BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath.

The uphill Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, and the expanding Manikonda areas were reeling under water shortage and the private tanker operators were having a field day with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) unable to meet the demand for water tankers, with demand per day crossing the 150 mark.

The twin reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar supplied 64 million litres of water each to quench the thirst of the city dwellers. However, the HMWSSB was forced to pump out more than the twin reservoirs could supply considering the demand for drinking water in the city.
