SC Collegium nods for Jyotirmai, Gopalakrishna Rao as new AP HC judges

The Supreme Court has approved the proposal for the appointment of P Venkata Jyotirmai and V Gopalakrishna Rao as the judges of Andhra Pradesh High Court

AMARAVATI: The Supreme Court has approved the proposal for the appointment of P Venkata Jyotirmai and V Gopalakrishna Rao as the judges of Andhra Pradesh High Court. The names of the two judges, recommended by the SC Collegium, were subsequently sent to the Centre for the customary assent from the President.

A Supreme Court Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice KM Joseph made the recommendations under the judicial magistrate quota.

Venkata Jyotirmai and Gopalakrishna will be taking oath as Andhra Pradesh High Court judges once the Minister for Law releases a notification post the assent of President Draupadi Murmu.

With this, the number of judges in the Andhra Pradesh High Court will reach 32 as against an optimum number of 37. The remaining five vacancies under the advocates quota will be filled soon. The collegium will soon propose the names of advocates to the Supreme Court. On the other hand, three judges are also likely to retire this year.

Venkata Jyotirmayi is currently the Principal District Judge (PDJ) of East Godavari while Gopalakrishna Rao is the first additional judge of Guntur.

P Venkata Jyotirmayi was born to Balatripura Sundari and PVK Shastri in Tenali of Guntur district. She completed her education up to Under-Graduation in Tenali, followed by Graduation in Law from Nagarjuna University with three gold medals. She was selected as a District Judge in 2008 and worked in various positions in the state. She has been serving as the Principal District Judge of East Godavari since April 18, 2022.

Venuthurumalli Gopalakrishna Rao was Born to Koteswaramma and Somaiah in Challapalli village of Krishna district. He completed SSC at Machilipatnam Jaihind School, Intermediate at SR YSP Junior College, Degree and PG from Machilipatnam. He was selected as a Junior Civil Judge in 1994 and promoted to Senior Civil Judge in 2007 before becoming District Judge in 2016. He is currently serving as First Additional District Judge in Guntur.

Gopalakrishna Rao is the first person in their family to become a magistrate while his Son V Raghunath was recently selected as a Junior Civil Judge. He is currently working at the Atmakur Court in Kurnool district.
