BALMORAL: Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, after being queen for 70 years. She died in her Scottish estate at Balmoral.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change in her reign.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, would become King and lead the country.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

"The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

The newly elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Liz Truss tweeted condolences to the Queen.

The 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton also tweeted his condolences.

Leader of Scottish National Party Nicola Sturgeon expressed grief on the Queen's death.
