Once upon a time, there used to be a good following for sports dramas. People used to watch sports-based films and biopics of sports stars with utmost interest. But that is not the case now. Due to the stereotypical format of most sports films, they are bombing at the box office.

A recent example of this trend is Liger. Though it is promoted as a sports drama, the least importance was given to the sport in this film. Thus, it ended up as a disaster. The same was the case with Varun Tej's recent film Ghani. It also bombed the box office due to its routine content.

Naga Shaurya's Lakshya and Keerthy Suresh's Good Luck Sakhi are no exceptions. Even though Nani's Jersey got critical acclaim, it was a financial failure in a few areas.

All these films feature the same format. A sport, A hero who has a lot of hurdles, an inspirational coach and the successful triumph of the hero in the end. Almost every film follows the same format and audiences got bored with it. They feel that until or unless the makers come up with a new narrative for sports films, this genre will not work at the box office anymore.
