KADAPA: The Annamayya district police, who have conducted raids at two different locations, arrested three smugglers and seized 26 logs of red sanders worth around Rs 20 lakhs.

Annamayya district Superintendent of Police Harshavardhan Raju disclosed the details of the case at the district police office here on Tuesday. According to him, the Railway Kodur police, upon receiving a tip-off, started combing for smugglers between Pottirajugari Palle and Sunnapurallapalle. The SP claimed that four smugglers, who were hiding in the bushes, attacked the police with stones. The police however dealt with the situation cleverly and managed to apprehend three of them.

Stating that steps had been taken to nab the other accused who fled from the spot, the SP said that two more smugglers were arrested in KV Palle mandal and seized 16 logs of Sandalwood, a Scorpio vehicle, and a Pulsar bike from the incident site. The SP expressed confidence that Basha, the linchpin of the gang who is in Bangalore, would be arrested soon. He said that surveillance would be continued on those who were involved in the illegal transportation of red sandalwood in the past.
