MANCHERIAL: In a rather atypical and bizarre incident, reflecting the persistent gender discrimination, that happened in Mancherial on Wednesday, a baby girl was left unclaimed and a baby boy was fought over for by two families.

Reportedly, two women Mamta and Pavani, delivered babies, one boy and the other a girl, on the same day in the same hospital and the then on-duty nurses told the babies' gender to the mothers. When the babies were sent for medical examination the family of the baby girl went to see the child. Nurses, who just entered their shift, showed the baby boy to the family of the lady who birthed the girl.

The family, always wanting a boy, refused to accept that the baby girl was theirs when they were informed later. The matter escalated and the hospital staff informed the police who rushed to spot and advised that a DNA test be done.

Both the families protested that an alternative be given as the DNA test results would take around 15 days and the babies would have to be kept in the hospital. To the surprise of the hospital staff, the mother who was informed that she birthed a girl was also silent about it.
