HYDERABAD: NephroPlus, India's premier network of dialysis centres dedicated to redefining dialysis and renal care, has revealed insights into the beneficial impact of nutrition on preventing further damage to dialysis patients' kidneys. The programme is yet another effort by the company to increase dialysis patients' understanding of how food can help them manage their conditions.

According to Dr. Suresh Sankar, Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs at NephroPlus, "Eating the right foods and avoiding foods high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus helps CKD patients avoid or postpone health complications. While there is a general lack of understanding about the role of diet and nutrition in health management, awareness is especially important for dialysis patients. Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease should be aware of the nutritional value of the foods they consume, as well as how their eating and drinking habits affect their kidneys. Furthermore, understanding the calorie count of foods as well as the composition of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins is critical."

"The MDRD study, a multicenter scientific investigation conducted in the 1990s, sought to learn how patients with chronic renal illnesses responded to protein restriction and blood pressure control. It was found that patients with moderate renal insufficiency may benefit from dietary treatments. Additionally, kidney function deterioration was noticeably delayed in people with more severe proteinuria ", Dr. Sankar stated.

The purpose of the diet is to keep the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and fluid in your body balanced when you have CKD or are on dialysis.

Work with a dietitian to develop a meal plan that includes foods you enjoy eating while maintaining your kidney health. Again, a little bit of planning and organizing helps.

Dr. Shankar also suggested that the patients engage with a dietician to create a meal plan that incorporates things they like to eat while preserving the health of their kidneys. He continued, "Again, a little bit of planning and arranging helps."
