HYDERABAD: Telangana Handlooms and Textiles Minister KT Rama Rao launched a campaign to further bring down financial distress experienced by poor handloom weavers. KTR wrote a postcard addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Irving him roll back the five percent GST on handloom clothes and raw materials.

Earnestly appealing to weavers in the State to write postcards to the Prime Minister highlighting the issue, KTR urged everyone, who were fond of handloom products, to join the campaign.


KTR underscored the significance of handlooms sector in India's freedom struggle, history of the handloom art.

He highlighted the problems confronted by handloom weavers and drew the attention of the Union government on several occasions. However, he said a positive response had always been elusive.

KTR said that the Union Government, which scrapped welfare programmes for the weavers, imposed GST on the handloom products and raw materials.

After agriculture, handlooms sector was the second largest employment generator. Minister KTR said that GST on handloom products must be rolled back on humanitarian grounds.
