NALGONDA: The Telangana Government is likely to knock on the doors of Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) after the illegal withdrawal of 2,000 cusecs of water illegally from the right canal of Nagarjunasagar dam by the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh State.

On Thursday, Andhra Pradesh policemen took control of over half the project’s spillway area and erected barricades near the 13th gate to prevent the police from Telangana going to the other side. To prevent the illegal withdrawal of water from the dam, the irrigation officials of Telangana had cut off power supply for the motors to release water from the right canal of the dam.

However, the Andhra Pradesh irrigation officials had released water from the right canal of the dam by arranging separate power connections, without taking consent from their Telangana counterparts. In return, the Telangana irrigation officials said that it was unfortunate that Andhra Pradesh irrigation authorities created ruckus unnecessarily in the name of having control of the dam and drinking water needs. “Inflows into the dam were very lean this water year and over seven TMC feet water has already been utilised by AP to meet its needs under the right and left canals”, the officials said.

The Telangana irrigation officials said that officials in Andhra Pradesh were aware of the poor water availability and were still asking to release water through the right canal for drinking and irrigation needs. “Releasing two TMC feet water under the left canal to Andhra Pradesh will force Telangana to release another two additional TMC feet water so as to ensure the flow. The dam had received a meager 90 TMC this water year against inflows of 1,723 TMC feet last water year,” the officials said and added that a detailed report over illegal withdrawal of water by Andhra Pradesh was taken into the notice of Telangana Government.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister Ambati Rambabu announced that water would be released from the right canal of Nagarjunasagar on River Krishna, for drinking purposes.
