SANGAREDDY: Members of the dreaded 'chaddi gang' were spotted once again on the outskirts of the city after almost three years, causing commotion and consternation among the residents. Spine-chilling footage from CCTV cameras showed how the members of the gang were lurking around in Brindavan Teachers' Colony of Ameenpur of Sangareddy district in the early hours of Tuesday.

Members of the notorious 'chaddi gang', which is known to attack and even kill people for money and valuables, typically wear only knickers and apply oil or mud on their bodies. Several cases across India were reported over the last many decades. Though they are known to strike their targets majorly in North India – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan – there were also instances of their robberies and burglaries in the two Telugu states in the past.

The gang was inactive in South India for more than a year. However, the latest CCTV footage shows that they are back in this part of the country. Residents of Brindavan Teachers Colony sent CCTV footage to the police in which 4-5 members were wandering wearing only their underwear, with faces covered and mud smeared all over their bodies, a typical characteristic of the chaddi gang. The police registered a case and were on the lookout for the gang members.

'Delhi Crime S2', which premiered on Netflix India in August 2022, was based on incidents of the criminal gang. A question to ponder on - was the gang inspired by the series to resurface?
