HYDERABAD: GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, has announced that strict measures will be taken to protect the people of the city from stray dogs.

At a review meeting with the high-level committee formed to prevent dog bites held on Monday, the Mayor stated that steps had been taken to sterilize and provide anti-birth control measures for stray dogs, as per the recommendations of the committee.

She also reviewed incidents of stray dog attacks in various places in the city and emphasised the importance of preventing such incidents from happening again. She stressed the need to provide anti-rabies vaccines to stray dogs and called for the establishment of special shelters for them.

The Mayor also announced plans to set up a one-acre shelter for stray dogs in Serilingampally. The committee members suggested creating awareness about the issue through various media platforms and recommended that zonal officials review the matter regularly. The Mayor ordered all six centres for stray dogs under GHMC to be monitored regularly, including timely feeding and provision of fresh water to the strays.

It was advised that measures should be taken to prevent stray dogs from roaming in groups and to stop dumping waste from meat shops in open spaces. The Mayor asked zonal officials to pay special attention to the disposal of meat and ordered the officials to take strict action.

The meeting was attended by Veterinary Officer Abdul Vakil, corporators CV Reddy, Shravan, Rajasekhar Reddy, Bannala Geetha Praveen, Padma Venkat Reddy, deputy directors, and veterinary doctors.
